The Los Angeles Chargers have named their first National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) referee "Crew of the Month," according to Chargers.com. The recognition is part of a new initiative the NFL rolled out this season.
Chargers.com describes the program as league-wide, with all 32 NFL clubs taking part. It honors high school football officiating crews that show honesty, objectivity, commitment and dedication to interscholastic athletics.
The September honorees are seven high school football officials from Southern California who represent the CIF San Diego Section. Chargers.com reports that the crew was nominated by Brian Seymour, the CIF Associate Executive Director.
Selection does not necessarily go to the best officials on the field. Per Chargers.com, honorees are chosen for going above and beyond in supporting student-athletes and upholding the values of education-based athletics.
In his nomination, Seymour said the crew consistently shows the highest standards of honesty, objectivity, professionalism and commitment to interscholastic football. He also credited their teamwork and their respectful treatment of coaches and student-athletes.
Chargers.com says a new Crew of the Month will be announced from September through December.
