The San Diego Padres made a roster change on Oct. 3, the day their NLDS against the Milwaukee Brewers opened with Game 1 in Milwaukee. MLB Trade Rumors reported that both clubs announced 26-man rosters that morning and that the Padres changed theirs shortly afterward, adding Vasquez after Buehler went on the paternity list.
Under postseason rules, a player on the paternity list must be away for at least one day and can be away for no more than three. MLB Trade Rumors noted that this makes Buehler's availability uncertain for both Game 1 and Sunday's Game 2. He may not be activated until the series moves to San Diego for Game 3 on Tuesday.
Buehler had looked likely to start one of the first two games. According to the report, King could now be in line to start Game 2. He would be on regular rest after pitching Tuesday in Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series, when he threw seven shutout innings.
Apart from the Vasquez move, San Diego is keeping the same roster it used to sweep the Cubs in two games. MLB Trade Rumors pointed out that no Padres reliever pitched more than once in that series, so the club apparently saw no need to add fresh bullpen arms.
On the Milwaukee side, Ortiz is ready to return after a full week of rest. The infielder had not played since the Brewers' third-to-last regular-season game, which he left with a bruised right knee. Manager Pat Murphy said Ortiz had also been playing through groin and oblique soreness. The report expects him to play third base.
