Kings Earn First Point of 2026-27 in 5-4 Overtime Loss to Sharks

Adrian Kempe, Quinton Byfield and Erik Haula scored for Los Angeles on Saturday at SAP Center, but San Jose won in overtime.

The Los Angeles Kings picked up their first point of the 2026-27 regular season on Saturday evening, but they lost 5-4 in overtime to the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center, according to NHL.com's game recap.

Adrian Kempe gave Los Angeles a 1-0 lead late in the first period with the team's first power-play goal of the season. Artemi Panarin found a passing lane through the circles, and Kempe one-timed the feed from the right side.

Alex Laferriere took a roughing minor at the end of the first period, and San Jose tied the game 1:48 into the second. Macklin Celebrini moved the puck to Ivar Stenberg, who set up Tyler Toffoli for a tap-in at the back post. The Sharks then scored two even-strength goals less than three minutes apart. Kiefer Sherwood picked off a cross-ice pass from Erik Haula in the Kings' zone and beat goaltender Anton Forsberg. Then Nolan Allan scored his first of the season off a drop pass from Michael Misa to make it 3-1.

Quinton Byfield cut the lead to 3-2 with 1.3 seconds left in the second period, scoring the Kings' second power-play goal of the game. He took a pass from Mats Zuccarello and beat Sharks goaltender Yaroslav Askarov on the blocker side for his first goal of the season.

Early in the third, Igor Chernyshov restored San Jose's two-goal lead. He split the Kings' defensemen and beat Forsberg short side with a backhand for his first goal of the season. Midway through the period, Haula won an offensive-zone faceoff, went to the front of the net and deflected an Erik Gustafsson point shot past Askarov to make it 4-3.
