Dodgers stick with Will Smith despite postseason slump

The catcher is hitting .053 in the playoffs. The Los Angeles Times reports that his work behind the plate rules out benching him after the Game 1 NLCS loss to Milwaukee.

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Will Smith is batting .053 this postseason, according to the Los Angeles Times. His struggles were a clear problem in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series.

Smith hit into a double play in that game. The Times says his slump has left a gap in the middle of the Dodgers' batting order.

Even so, the Los Angeles Times reports that taking Smith out of the lineup isn't a realistic choice. His contributions at catcher are too important for the Dodgers to bench him, even while the hits aren't coming.

Manager Dave Roberts isn't overly worried about Smith's lack of production, the Times reports. Roberts may still move Smith to a different spot in the batting order to try to get him going.

This report covers the Dodgers through Game 1 of the NLCS. The paper did not say where Smith might bat if Roberts changes the order.
